Jersey's best beach
02 March 2010 12:38
well there's no doubt that the west is best for beaches in Jersey. And Jersey beaches are some of the best in the world.
Greve de Lecq was our winner when the children were toddlers with its brilliant sand castle building sand, rock pools, handy loo and the exceptional Colleens Cafe for full meals, proper Jersey ice cream, or a coffee and a read of the paper.
Whilst a tough walk down (and much worse going back up) Plemeont is stunning. Its submerged by the tide for half the time so is extremely clean, exceptional sand, great water holes and caves. It also has a great cafe and loos up from the beach. But car parking is a pain and do be orgainised in carrying stuff down - we use a large rucksack. We've also had some great fun on the boogie boards and jumping from the rocks as the tide comes in. It can be heavenly. Handy for low tide days. A good option if the wind is howling from the south or west.
Beauport competes for beauty with Plemont and is why we have named our lodges after a beach that has to be one of the best in the world. For some its advantage is it has no facilities and is a hike down so not usually too busy. I often walk around this beautiful area. Best when the tide is not too low. Sheltered from most of the wind.
Now our children are bigger St Ouen and the surf wins. A potentially dangerous beach so do not swim out of your depth and keep within the flags. A summers evening with a high tide, setting sun, rolling surf, and a barbecue on the sea wall makes this the best of the best. Do join the locals down here in the summer. It's like the beach boys!
Other tips; plan the beach around the tides and wind. Lotion is a must, cover up and wear a hat as the Jersey sun beats strong, Be organised in carrying stuff, and if you can have at least a short wet suit, it just means you can stay in the water longer and enjoy it more. Only swim where the locals swim.
